On Tuesday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs restructured All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce's contract to create some salary-cap space this fall. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio and Chris Simms have an interesting theory regarding that move.
Per Florio, Simms "said he’s heard the Chiefs are thinking about making a run" at none other than free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham hasn't played since he suffered a torn ACL featuring for the Los Angeles Rams during their Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in February but reportedly could be cleared to return at some point between the middle of November and early December.
"The key will be to move at the right time, and the right time will arrive before OBJ is 100-percent healthy," Florio wrote. He added: "The truth could be that the Chiefs are looking to add OBJ to a good-to-great receiving corps that will get a lot better if he’s healthy and effective."
Florio is right that Beckham should have plenty of suitors following the Halloween holiday. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has been linked with returns to former clubs the Rams and also the 5-1 New York Giants but has teased signing with the Green Bay Packers to play alongside future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
ESPN stats show that, Kelce aside, JuJu Smith-Schuster currently leads all Kansas City wide receivers for the season with 27 catches and 370 receiving yards across six games. While the Chiefs are 4-2 heading into this coming Sunday's matchup at the 3-3 San Francisco 49ers, logic suggests quarterback Patrick Mahomes would happily welcome an additional weapon to Kansas City's passing attack for the final stretch of contests ahead of the playoffs.
