Report: Dolphins may be featured in NFL's expanded international series

It’s been nearly three decades since an NFL game was played in Spain, but that just may change in the next few years.

According to a report from Peter King of NBC Sports, the Miami Dolphins are in line to play an overseas game or two by 2026 as the NFL looks to expand its international series beyond London, Germany and Mexico City.

“The NFL will play games outside of England and Germany at some point; Miami could play a game in Brazil or Spain in the next three or four years,” King recently wrote. “The Rams are bullish about playing in Australia one day. But clearly the horizon with the biggest upside is Europe. There were journalists from 22 countries credentialed for Sunday’s game, including 18 in Europe (Croatia, Serbia, Portugal), with varying degrees of enthusiasm.”

Brazil and Spain both feature high-capacity venues that would appeal to the NFL. Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro holds approximately 78,838 fans, while Camp Nou in Barcelona — the largest stadium in Spain and home to soccer powerhouse FC Barcelona — has a capacity of 99,354.

The Dolphins have played in 10 international games in franchise history — six in London, and one each in Tokyo, Germany, Mexico City and Toronto — posting a 6-4 record.
