Seahawks Release Running Back After Zach Charbonnet Update

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are off to a rough start. They are currently 3-3 and the offense has struggled to find its footing. Specifically, quarterback Sam Darnold has been unable to get going and is not playing well.

Seattle’s rushing attack has been noticeably underwhelming this year, which has added pressure on Darnold. It is easy to see why. The Seahawks elected to move on from Kenneth Walker this past offseason and let him walk to the Kansas City Chiefs.

They tried to replace him with Jadarian Price, whom they selected with their first-round pick, but that has not worked out so far with Price on injured reserve with a chest injury. The workload was not supposed to fall entirely on him. Zach Charbonnet was expected to help out.

Charbonnet has long operated as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart behind Walker, but he has been sidelined all season after tearing his ACL during last year’s playoff run. He has been making progress, however, and is on the verge of making his return in Week 7 against the Chiefs.

Head coach Mike Macdonald mentioned last week that a Week 7 debut is a realistic target, with Charbonnet likely handling a bulk of the carries, per Gregg Bell of Seattle Sports.

With Charbonnet nearing his return, the Seahawks made corresponding roster moves Monday.

The team announced it has released running back Dontae McMillan from the practice squad, along with receiver Malick Meiga. In their place, Seattle added fullback Jackson Acker and tight end Josiah Deguara.

For McMillan, the move comes not only because of Charbonnet’s likely return but also because the Seahawks need different depth after losing Elijah Arroyo to a shoulder injury.

Adding a fullback and tight end addresses that need, and McMillan was also expendable with Emmanuel Wilson and George Holani above him on the depth chart.
