Shane Steichen Endorses Colts DC Lou Anarumo

Indianapolis has allowed 74 points through two weeks while surrendering an average of 7.2 yards per play. Significant improvement on both fronts will of course be needed if the team’s losing streak (dating back to the second half of 2025) is to come to an end. A change at the defensive coordinator spot currently occupied by Lou Anarumo is not being considered, however.

“Yeah, absolutely. I have confidence in Lou, no doubt about it,” head coach Shane Steichen said during a press conference yesterday (video link). “He’s been doing it for a long time in this league. He’s had success in this league, and I have no doubt that this thing will get turned defensively.”

The Colts were 8-2 entering their bye week last season. The 2025 campaign ended on a seven-game losing streak, though, and it became clear during the offseason that Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard face a mandate to turn things around in 2026. Ballard’s deal is set to expire after the year, while Steichen is likewise facing an uncertain future. In-season coaching moves will become something to watch for around the league in the case of struggling teams in particular.

Anarumo spent six years in Cincinnati before joining Steichen’s staff last year. During his first season in Indianapolis, the 60-year-old’s unit ranked 23rd in points allowed in 21st in scoring defense. The Colts are currently last in the NFL in both of those respects, but a return to 2025 production may not be sufficient for a playoff spot to become attainable. In any case, Anarumo is safe for at least the time being.

“Again, we want to be better than it was the first two games,” Steichen added. “There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. We have to be better there. But I do. I have a lot of confidence in [Anarumo] and what we’re doing moving forward.”
