Shedeur Sanders shares honest feelings on Deshaun Watson relationship

“It’s a level of respect that we all in the quarterback room have for each other. And we’re not really emotional when it comes to things that we can’t control,” 92.3 The Fan reported him saying on July 20. 

Sanders, the younger, healthier passer, is up against Watson, who is determined to redeem himself this season. Franchise owner Jimmy Haslam called Watson a “swing and a miss” after he missed the 2025 season entirely due to his twice-ruptured Achilles tendon.

Sanders was benched for the first ten weeks in his rookie season last year, and Watson’s return poses the same threat once again. 

At 30, with an injury as serious as his, there were little expectations from Watson. Yet, Watson, per insider Mary Kay Cabot’s 29 April report, even had the lead. 

That was before Sanders closed the gap between the two. While Watson needs to clear his name, Sanders, Browns lead passer with 1,400 passing yards, needs to prove he is franchise quarterback caliber. 

The competition is reaching its most pivotal stage, the team just met for pre training camp workouts in Miami, and is moving ahead to make one of the most important decisions for this season.

One analyst has made his choice in the competition and is backing it ferociously.

Deshaun Watson signed a five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns but has played in just 19 games over the past four years. Senior NFL writer for Yahoo Sports, Frank Schwab, highlighted the poor returns the Browns gained from signing Watson. 

He advised them against trusting Watson this time around.

“You’ve paid this money for Deshaun Watson. It does not mean Deshaun Watson’s going to become good,” Schwab said on Yahoo Sports Daily podcast. “I would rather start literally anybody off the street than Deshaun Watson.”

Winning is a must for both. Any other outcome would ensure an irredeemable reputation for Watson and an unfavorable impression for Sanders.
