Steelers 2026 Training Camp Preview: Defensive Line

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter training camp with one of the more intriguing defensive line groups they’ve had in years. While Cameron Heyward continues to defy Father Time, the organization has quietly reshaped the future of the position through recent draft investments.

Keeanu Benton needs to take the next step after an encouraging but inconsistent start to his career, while last year’s first-round rookie Derrick Harmon is expected to play a significant role going forward. 2025 fifth-round pick Yahya Black adds size and developmental upside, while veteran Sebastian Joseph-Day brings experience to a room transitioning toward its next generation.

Under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, this group could look different than Steelers fans have grown accustomed to. Graham’s defenses have traditionally emphasized versatility and movement along the defensive front, making the development of Pittsburgh’s young linemen one of the biggest storylines entering training camp.

Here’s a closer look at the defensive linemen heading to Latrobe.

Cameron Heyward

Few players have meant more to the Steelers over the past decade than Cameron Heyward.

Selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Heyward has built a resume worthy of Canton, earning seven Pro Bowl selections, four First-Team All-Pro honors, and establishing himself as one of the greatest defensive linemen in franchise history. Even at age 37 he remains the unquestioned leader of Pittsburgh’s defense.

The team extended Heyward this offseason, ensuring the veteran captain will retire as a Steeler and continue to mentor the franchise’s next generation of defensive linemen.

While his days of playing nearly every snap are getting closer with every day, his value extends far beyond the stat sheet. Heyward also continues to be an iron man on the field, even though he dipped to 3.5 sacks total in 2025, he played every game over the last two seasons.

With Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon, and Yahya Black all expected to play meaningful roles this season, Heyward’s leadership may be just as important as his production. If the younger linemen continue to develop while Heyward remains an impact player, Pittsburgh’s defensive front could become one of the deepest units on the roster.

Keeanu Benton

The Steelers drafted Keeanu Benton in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the expectation that he would eventually become the centerpiece of their defensive line.

That transition appears well underway, as Benton had a career-high 5.5 sacks, which doubled his totals over his first two years in the league.

Benton has steadily improved during his first three NFL seasons, displaying the power to anchor against the run while flashing the interior pass-rush ability that made him such an attractive prospect coming out of Wisconsin. He has already shown he can line up at multiple spots across the defensive front, something that could become even more valuable under Graham.

Entering his final season on his rookie deal, Benton looks poised for the largest role of his career. The Steelers are counting on him to become more than just a complementary piece to Heyward. They need him to emerge as a difference-maker capable of carrying the defensive line into its next era.

Derrick Harmon

The Steelers also made Derrick Harmon a high draft pick (21st overall pick in 2025) to secure the future of their defensive line for years to come. However, his rookie season didn’t begin as planned. An MCL sprain suffered during the preseason delayed his NFL debut until Week 3, but Harmon wasted little time making an impact.

He recorded his first career sack against the New England Patriots and steadily earned a larger role before a late-season knee injury cut his campaign short.

Despite missing time at both the beginning and end of the season, Harmon had three sacks and showed enough to earn the Joe Greene Great Performance Award as the Steelers’ top rookie. The flashes of power, athleticism, and interior pass-rushing ability that made him a first-round pick were evident throughout the year.

Now healthy entering his second training camp, Harmon is expected to become a major part of Patrick Graham’s defensive front. Alongside Cameron Heyward and Keeanu Benton, he’ll have every opportunity to establish himself as one of the building blocks of Pittsburgh’s defense.

Yahya Black

Omar Khan has been dedicated to injecting youth into the defensive line and did so by selecting Yahya Black in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

At well over 330 pounds, the massive Black gives Pittsburgh the kind of run defender every defense covets.

His length and strength allow him to occupy blockers and create opportunities for linebackers behind him. He showed flashes last season but he will need to continue refining his technique to earn consistent playing time.

Black enters camp competing for a rotational role, but he’ll also have an opportunity to prove he can contribute on early downs and in short-yardage situations. His physical traits that attracted the Steelers to him remain obvious and he should still be a key piece of the defensive core over the 17-game span of the regular season.

Sebastian Joseph-Day

The Steelers added valuable experience to their defensive front this offseason by signing Sebastian Joseph-Day to a two-year contract in free agency. The $11 million deal suggests that the front office isn’t yet satisfied with the younger players noted above, and wanted insurance in the event of poor play or injury.

Joseph-Day is a major insurance policy in that regard. The 31-year-old still has plenty of football left in him. A sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2018, Joseph-Day has started games for four different franchises and brings nearly a decade of NFL experience to Pittsburgh.

He was a member of Los Angeles’ Super Bowl LVI championship team and has built a reputation as a dependable run defender capable of handling multiple roles along the defensive line.

Joseph-Day spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, appearing in all 34 games while totaling 85 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. His consistency and durability made him an attractive addition for a Steelers team looking to strengthen its defensive line depth while easing the workload on Cameron Heyward.

Although he comes to camp with no expectations to be a full-time starter, Joseph-Day could play an important role in the defensive line rotation. His veteran presence gives the Steelers flexibility as Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black continue to develop, while providing another reliable option against the run and in short-yardage situations.

The Others

Several veterans with various degrees of game experience litter the backend of the training camp roster, including Dean Lowry, Logan Lee, Esezi Otomewo, and Kyler Baugh

Those players will compete for the final roster spots along with sixth round selection Gabriel Rubio out of Notre Dame.

For all intents and purposes it would appear with the five names that were mentioned above, that the remaining players are all competing for potentially one spot remaining on the team’s 53-man active roster.
