Steelers' Cam Heyward Gives Transparency On Looming Retirement Decision

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a ton of veteran talent on their team, especially on defense. With training camp underway, some of these vets will be experiencing a new head coaching change for the first time in their professional careers. The big changes affect the whole team, but the vets are expected to be leaders throughout the process, with guys like four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt leading the offense and defense, respectively.

You can't mention defense and experience without mentioning defensive tackle Cam Heyward. Heyward was drafted in the first round by Pittsburgh in 2011 and has become one of the cornerstones of the unit over his time with the Black and Gold. Now entering his 16th season, the seven-time Pro Bowler will have plenty on his plate under the new regime. Though most players with this sheer longevity don't produce at the same level as they once did in their younger years, Heyward has been the polar opposite. 

Having been named a Second Team All-Pro in 2025, he'll look to continue his dominance in a new defensive system in 2026. Though age is catching up to him, he's been able to beat Father Time thus far. Though there has been fear of retirement, Heyward signed a one-year extension in March to keep him signed through the 2027 season. Although retirement isn't completely off the table, Heyward was interviewed by former teammate Bryant McFadden with CBS Sports, and he shared how he'll approach what could be the final year or years of his illustrious career. 

"I signed up for this year, and next, that's the way I'm approaching it. But each year is its own, so I really try to hone in on each year, see how my body reacts, give myself some [time] off, but I know there's a big hunger there, and I'm trying to get to that finish line and hoist one of those trophies," Heyward said. 

Heyward taking it one step at a time is no surprise. He's playing in his age-37 season at one of, if not the most, physically demanding position in football. Clearly, he hasn't shown regression either. If anything, he's gotten better with age, but Heyward will have to take it one season at a time moving forward. He's exemplified everything that a Steelers defensive lineman is known for: being tough, having a nose for the football, and tremendous effort. 

Heyward put up solid numbers in 2025, with 78 combined tackles (the third-highest mark of his career), 3.5 sacks, and six pass deflections. He was a force in the run game, as he typically is, and his presence was felt. He'll need to keep up his high-motor play if the Steelers' defense wants to change the narrative. A group that was the highest-paid in 2025 but produced mediocre results, needs to flip the script. Heyward continuing to play at an All-Pro level is one piece of the puzzle. 

The defensive line is full of young players eager to make an impact on the defense, and Heyward is the leader of the group. His leadership will prove important, especially in such a unique time for the team, and could be something the defense relies on. 

The Steelers Need Heyward To Take Charge

Heyward's an established player. He's played for multiple defensive coordinators and has seen plenty of players come and go over his years. However, every team is different. This roster has a mixture of youth and age, and his reaction through adversity will be vital in getting the younger players acclimated. The defensive line, especially, has an influx of youth. 

Between second-year player Derrick Harmon, whose rookie year gave much to be excited for, and another second-year defender in Yahya Black, Pittsburgh has prepared for Heyward to pass the torch, and these two will be a big proponent in ensuring the defensive line stays dominant for years to come.
