Steelers LB Alex Highsmith says it's 'quieter' without DT Cameron Heyward

Veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward has been absent from the Steelers' voluntary offseason workouts and OTAs and does not plan to show up as he seeks a contract extension, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Heyward, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $64 million extension he signed in September 2020, has been one of the biggest voices in Pittsburgh's locker room as a longtime team captain and 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

The team, including linebacker Alex Highsmith, can feel the difference.

"Cam's definitely one of those leadership voices in the locker room. So when he's here, you'll hear him, especially out at practices," Highsmith said. "We can't wait to have him back in the building."

Other players get more opportunities to make their cases for bigger roles in his absence. One of those who has caught the attention of Highsmith is second-year defensive tackle Keeanu Benton.

"I've seen a lot from him just growth-wise coming into his second year. He's someone who came in and played a lot his rookie year and made a lot of impact," Highsmith added. "Him stepping up into a role his second year is just going to be awesome for us."

Benton only got better throughout his rookie year, during which he registered 36 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed. His role should only continue to grow in year two, even when Heyward likely makes his return during the mandatory portion of the Steelers' offseason program.

For now, however, Heyward's future in Pittsburgh remains uncertain, as he hopes to play for at least a few more years.

"My goal is to play two to three more years. Mostly three," Heyward told Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. "I'm looking for an opportunity. We'll see what happens. I'd like it to be here, but my goal is to play. So we'll see."

Until the two sides can come to an agreement, the Steelers will have to get used to their practices being a bit quieter.
