Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett sounds wise beyond his years in understanding he's now in football's ultimate results-based business.
"There was definitely positives, but the almost doesn't get you anything," Pickett told reporters Wednesday about this past Sunday's 16-10 loss at the Miami Dolphins that dropped Pittsburgh to 2-5 on the season, per Dale Lolley of the club's website. "You want to go finish the game. I felt like we were efficient in the two-minute until the turnover play. It's something I'll learn from, we'll learn from as a group."
Specifically, Pickett twice drove the Steelers into Miami territory in the fourth quarter but ended both drives with costly interceptions. Head coach Mike Tomlin noted Tuesday that he wants to see Pickett "playing to win," and the 24-year-old admitted he plans to remain aggressive moving forward.
"You look at some of the turnover plays, it's a ball getting tipped, or Chase (Claypool) getting his feet tangled up," Pickett explained. "Some things just don't go your way. That's life. That's football. There's times we have to take chances and give our guys a chance down the field. There's a fine line between it. We're trying to balance that out."
Pickett has thrown seven interceptions and only two touchdown passes across fewer than four full games this fall. One imagines he'd like to flip those numbers beginning with this Sunday's matchup at the 6-0 Philadelphia Eagles.
"We can't press," Pickett added during his comments. "We have to let it happen. If they're not there, we have to check it down. You can't press as a player. Bad things happen."
