The Pittsburgh Steelers have a rich history of unearthing talent that makes immediate contributions. Over the past three decades, several rookies have delivered standout seasons, earning awards, setting records and helping shape playoff runs. From historic debuts to recent linemen anchoring the trenches, these 10 first-year performers stood out.
No rookie in this span matched Ben Roethlisberger‘s 2004 impact. The 11th overall pick from Miami (Ohio) went 13-0 as a starter, leading the Steelers to a 15-1 record and the AFC Championship game. He threw for 2,621 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 98.1 passer rating in 14 games.
Roethlisberger earned Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. His poise in the pocket and ability to win close games transformed a franchise coming off mediocrity. Few quarterbacks have debuted with such immediate success.
Linebacker Kendrell Bell claimed the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2001. The second-round pick from Georgia recorded nine sacks, 82 tackles and strong run-stopping production from the inside. His explosiveness anchored a stout Steelers defense during a resurgence.
Bell’s rookie campaign set high expectations, though injuries later curtailed his career. He exemplified the Steelers’ knack for finding impact defenders early.
Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster set a then-Steelers rookie record with 917 receiving yards in 2017, adding seven touchdowns in 14 games. The second-round pick led NFL rookies in several categories and won the Joe Greene Great Performance Award as the team’s top rookie.
Chase Claypool followed with a dynamic 2020 season. The second-rounder posted 62 receptions for 873 yards and nine receiving touchdowns, plus two rushing scores for 11 total. He became the first Steelers rookie with four touchdowns in a single game.
Running back Najee Harris delivered durability in 2021. The first-round Alabama product rushed for 1,200 yards on 307 carries with seven touchdowns while adding 74 receptions for 467 yards. He earned the Joe Greene Award for his volume and versatility behind a shaky offensive line.
Le’Veon Bell provided an earlier blueprint in 2013. The second-round pick rushed for 860 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games, adding 399 receiving yards. His vision and pass-catching set the stage for future Pro Bowl seasons.
T.J. Watt laid the foundation for his Hall of Fame trajectory in 2017. The first-rounder notched seven sacks, 54 tackles and an interception in 15 games. While not yet at his peak, Watt showed the versatility and motor that would define his career.
The Steelers continued finding rookie value on the offensive line. Center Zach Frazier earned the 2024 Joe Greene Award after stepping in and providing stability as a second-round pick. His technique and intelligence earned PFWA All-Rookie honors.
Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon took the award in 2025, highlighting strong interior play.
Other notable rookies include Martavis Bryant (2014 Joe Greene winner) for his deep-threat ability and earlier contributors like Maurkice Pouncey (2010).
These players often combined statistical production with team success. Many won the Joe Greene Award, voted on by Pittsburgh-area Pro Football Writers. Offensive skill players dominate highlight reels due to visible stats, but defensive anchors and linemen provide the foundation Steelers teams rely on.
Era adjustments matter (17-game seasons versus 16, rule changes favoring offense), yet the impact remains clear. The Steelers’ scouting has repeatedly identified rookies ready to contribute at a high level.
As the franchise builds for the future, history suggests the next draft class could yield similar breakthroughs. From Roethlisberger’s leadership to Harris’ workload, these 10 rookies delivered memorable debuts that Steelers fans still celebrate.
