Stephen A. Smith still has confidence in the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl in 2025-26 despite blowing a 15-point lead in the opening day defeat against the Buffalo Bills. Smith blamed the Ravens for allowing Josh Allen to play his natural game.

The Ravens dominated the first three quarters. Despite conceding an early touchdown, the AFC North franchise went into the break with a 20-13 scoreline.

Seven turned into fifteen after quarterback Lamar Jackson contributed two touchdowns in the third quarter. Jackson had 10+ completions, 180+ yards through the air, and 50+ on the ground before the Bills took over. To put it bluntly, Allen took over.

You had a 15-point lead with over five minutes left—an eight-point lead with three minutes left, and somehow, someway, you didn’t get it done on a fourth and three with a little over a minute and thirty left. You can’t give the ball back to Josh Allen.

Stephen A. Smith said on his show

The Bills got the ball back after a costly fumble from Derrick Henry, who, on the day, surpassed (108) the legendary Jim Brown, on the list of the most rushing touchdowns in NFL history.

Smith questioned head coach John Harbaugh ’s play-calling. He wanted to see Harbaugh let Jackson throw the ball instead of running, which resulted in the fumble. Regardless, the ball was now in the hands of Josh Allen.

Up until that point, Allen had a little over 140 yards and one touchdown. When the referee blew the final whistle, the reigning league MVP amassed 300+ yards and three touchdowns, setting 41-year-old Matt Prater up to snatch the win.

It was Allen and the Bills’ second win in five games after giving up 40 to their opponents (48-42 vs. Detroit Lions in Week 15 last season). So, they’re no strangers to a come-from-behind win. From Smith’s point of view, however, it was the Baltimore Ravens who lost the game rather than giving the Bills the credit for winning it.

Somehow, someway, the Baltimore Ravens always seem to get in their own damn way, [but] I still got them winning the Super Bowl.

Stephen A. Smith quipped

According to the AP research, a Harbaugh-led Ravens team has blown a 40-point lead 8 times since 2015.

Former NFL MVP torched the Ravens for losing the week one fixture

ESPN’s First Take discussed the Ravens’ loss to the Bills at length. Former NFL quarterback and MVP Cam Newton joined the discussion via FaceTime to criticize some of the decisions the Ravens took during the game.

Newton expressed disappointment with Jackson and the defense, but was particularly unhappy with Henry.

The Ravens collapsed. There are things that cannot happen. Derrick Henry knows that fumble cannot happen. Another thing, too, where was the Ravens’ defense?… 251 passing yards in the fourth quarter alone. Josh Allen had over 400 yards of offense by himself… They did every single thing but win the football game .

Cam Newton said

Henry rushed 18 times for 169 yards and 2 scores, but the fixture will forever haunt him because of the fumble. The All-Pro RB told The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec that his mistake put his team in “a bad spot.”

What’s done is done. The only action the Ravens can take is to learn from their mistakes and make sure they don’t repeat them in the future. The Ravens return to Baltimore to host divisional rivals the Cleveland Browns in week two.
