Tennessee Titans fire HC Brian Callahan

“After extended conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan this morning to tell him we are making a change at head coach,” read the release from Chad Brinker, the President of Football Operations for the Titans. “These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character. We are grateful for Brian’s investment in the Titans and Tennessee community during his tenure as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.”

“While we are committed to a patient and strategic plan to build a sustainable, winning football program, we have not demonstrated sufficient growth,” it continued. “Our players, fans, and community deserve a football team that achieves a standard we are not currently meeting, and we are committed to making the hard decisions necessary to reach and maintain that standard.”

Callahan, hired to replace Mike Vrabel ahead of the 2024 season, went 3-14 in year one at the helm. That secured Tennessee the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, which they used to select quarterback Cam Ward. In year two, the Titans are now 1-5 overall, bringing him to a final record of 4-19 (.174) while the head coach in Music City.

Callahan served as offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2019-23, helping orchestrate some of the league’s best offenses with Joe Burrow under center. It never happened in Tennessee, even after he gave up play-calling duties quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree.

With Callahan out, the Titans will search for a new head coach this offseason. Finding a coach that can get the best out of Ward will be a priority, with the franchise having struggled the past four seasons now.

However, in the present, this comes at an ironic time. That’s with Vrabel set to make his return to Nashville this weekend when the New England Patriots (4-2) play the Tennessee Titans (1-5) at Nissan Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Week 7.
