Texans Set Ultimatum With C.J. Stroud's Contract Negotiations

The Houston Texans set a deadline in contract extension talks with quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio told reporters Tuesday that they’ll halt negotiations with Stroud if the two sides don’t reach an agreement by Week 1. They would then resume conversations before Stroud’s final 2027 season under contract.

Caserio said the team has had “productive discussions” with Stroud. He previously called it a “possibility” that they’d sign Stroud to a long-term deal before Houston opens the season against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 13.

“If we don’t get it figured out before the season starts, then it’ll be something we address in the offseason,” Caserio said.

Will Texans extend Stroud?

All hope reportedly isn’t entirely lost on the Texans and Stroud working something out in the next two weeks. The two sides “are not far off” in contract talks, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander.

“However, neither side is in a rush to get a deal done before the season,” Alexander wrote, adding that an extension “will probably happen next offseason.”

The Texans already picked up Stroud’s fifth-year option, so the former first-round pick will make approximately $25.9 million in 2027. The 24-year-old could help his cause with a bounce-back 2026 campaign.

Stroud looked like a future superstar when posting a 100.8 quarterback rating in an exceptional rookie season. However, the former Ohio State star followed that introduction by throwing a dozen interceptions with an 87.0 quarterback rating in 2024.

Last season left some critics questioning whether Stroud is a true franchise quarterback. He amassed 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 92.9 quarterback rating in 14 regular-season games before throwing four picks in a disastrous AFC Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots.

If no deal is reached by Week 1, the upcoming season could significantly affect Stroud’s extension talks next offseason.

“C.J.’s leadership, his accountability, his communication, all those things have been as good as they’ve been since he’s been here,” Caserio said. “Overall the group has worked really hard. They’ve made a lot of progress, and hopefully that translates to good production once they hit the field on Sundays.”
