The Baltimore Ravens just freed up some additional spending power thanks to a key date on the league calendar
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The calendar now sits on June 2nd, which is cause for celebration for several franchises across the NFL. The June 1st threshold is an unofficial holiday for teams, as players cut with a post-June 1st designation will now, finally, provide their respective teams with much-needed salary cap relief. The Baltimore Ravens are among the teams enjoying some extra spending power this morning.

Teams can designate up to two players as post-June 1 cuts. Baltimore’s two designated cuts are kicker Justin Tucker and safety Marcus Williams, both of whom saw their tenure with the team end unceremoniously. Tucker has faced a seemingly endless series of sexual misconduct accusations tied to massage therapists. While his release was tabbed as a “football decision”, it was not exclusively about football.

Williams, who signed a hefty deal with Baltimore in 2022, was benched this season after seeing his play regress. His benching coincided with Baltimore’s defensive turnaround in the second half of the season, making a departure imminent this offseason.

What are the specifics of Baltimore’s savings? Here is a breakdown courtesy of Over The Cap:

Tucker’s play had certainly fallen in 2024, but multiple accusations against Tucker drove his release. His cap number drops from $7.0725 to $2.8725 million. The team will have $4.645 million in dead money in 2026. Tucker is out of the NFL.

Williams cap numbers drops from $8.13 million to $6.03 million in 2025. He will also count for $6.03 million in 2026. Williams is not under contract to an NFL team.

The total in savings is $6.3 million in cap space for the Ravens and the team is now projected to have approximately $22 million in cap space. It’s all plenty of wiggle room for Baltimore for any potential moves that come down the pipe. The potential may be there for Baltimore to sign a bridge player at safety with Ar’Darius Washington’s ongoing recovery from a recent Achilles tear.

Perhaps that’s where Baltimore looks, or else they may choose to prioritize one of their own on a contract extension, which is very much up Eric DeCosta’s wheelhouse as a general manager. Be it Travis Jones, Kyle Hamilton, Tyler Linderbaum, Isaiah Likely, or someone else, the Ravens have no shortage of candidates on whom to spend their newfound cap savings.
