After a tough-to-stomach loss in Week 1 and on the verge of an epic rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles from Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs could use some good news. Fortunately, they're getting just that with each new report on Xavier Worthy.
Worthy, a second-year wide receiver, has been out since the first few plays of the season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers with a shoulder injury. Worthy was not only taken out of the rest of that game, but early worries were that the Chiefs' former first-round pick would miss considerable time with a dislocated right shoulder.
As it turns out, the reports emerging between games have been nothing but good news for Worthy and the Chiefs. Following Wednesday's heartening update that Worthy would not be placed on injured reserve, the Chiefs brought Worthy back to practice on Thursday.
For those wondering whether or not this means Worthy will be able to play in Week 2, there's no way of knowing just yet but that still feels unlikely given the severity of the on-ramp involved—from being out of practice completely to coming back in a limited capacity just three days before the game. That said, an earlier-than-expected return is certainly in the cards.
Worthy was originally lost when colliding with tight end Travis Kelce on a crossing route on the Chiefs' first offensive drive agains the Chargers.
Given the six-game suspension levied on wide receiver Rashee Rice to begin the season, Patrick Mahomes has been forced to play without his two best targets to start the year. This comes one year after losing both Rice and Hollywood Brown last year, which limited the offense for the entirety of the season.
Upon his eventual return, Worthy should immediately slot in as the Chiefs' most dynamic offensive weapon. There's not another player with the playmaking skill of Worthy, who is the Chiefs' best downfield threat since Tyreek Hill was traded in 2022. Not only that, but Worthy looked like a much more complete receiver down the stretch for the Chiefs than anyone could have projected in his rookie season.
Rice will return in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders, but it also sounds like Worthy could be in the fold much sooner than that. Perhaps Worthy will be healthy enough to take the field in Week 3 against the New York Giants or Week 4 versus the Baltimore Ravens. Either way, the updates are most welcome after processing the initial fears of something much worse.
