The Real Purpose of Rams' Preseason

The Los Angeles Rams have taken a cautious approach to the preseason, and in 2026, that strategy should continue.

Some teams use exhibition games to help starters build rhythm ahead of Week 1, but the Rams operate differently. Their focus is on protecting and resting key contributors until the games that actually matter — the regular season.

The Rams rely on training camp, Woodland Hills sessions and joint practices to sharpen their top players before the opener. Their single goal: playing football in February. Entering 2026, that's the expectation for a roster many consider the NFL's most talented, loaded with stars from proven veterans to emerging young talent.

Matthew Stafford won't play. The reigning MVP has nothing to gain from preseason snaps after arguably the best season of his career. The same likely goes for most starters, including stars such as Puka Nacua and Myles Garrett.

Sitting starters also guards against injury — a real risk in preseason games, where even a handful of snaps can end a player's season. It's a risk McVay wants to avoid.

It might not be for everybody

"We feel confident and comfortable with the approach we're taking, and we understand that it might not be for everybody," McVay said in 2019. "You never want to see your main guys that you're counting on get injured, especially in games where it's really just tuneups for the regular season."

Still, these games carry real value for players fighting for a 53-man roster spot — undrafted free agents and roster bubble hopefuls looking for a chance to prove themselves.

First-round rookie quarterback Ty Simpson is the exception to the Rams' sit-the-starters approach. McVay confirmed Saturday that the No. 13 overall pick will play Aug. 15 against Kansas City. The snaps will give the Alabama product reps he rarely got in camp as the No. 3 quarterback, behind Stetson Bennett.

While the backup quarterback competition isn't officially over, Simpson could need a few strong preseason showings to claim the job. Bennett could also see the field, but that call will come closer to the opener.

For the Rams, preseason is about staying healthy. Everything else comes second.
