After a surprise appearance in last year’s NFC Championship Game, things are looking up for the Washington Commanders. Of course, no roster is perfect. Here are three things we’d still like to know about the 2025 team.
Do they need another pass-rusher?
All NFL teams could use another pass-rusher, but the Commanders need one more than most after losing linebacker Dante Fowler Jr. in the offseason. Fowler led the team with 10.5 sacks in 2024, while no one among the team’s current edge-rushers had more than five sacks.
Washington ignored the position altogether in the 2025 NFL Draft, passing on Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell in the first round and the Razorbacks’ Landon Jackson in the second round. Of course, it came into the draft holding only four picks, but the team had plenty of money to spend on free agents this offseason.
After failing to land players like former Cowboy DeMarcus Lawrence and former Charger Joey Bosa, the team re-signed defensive ends Clelin Ferrell and Jalyn Holmes to one-year contracts and added former Patriot Deatrich Wise Jr. to the roster.
The Commanders will look to upgrade the position before the start of the regular season, but at this moment, former Bills linebacker Von Miller and former Falcon Matt Judon look to be the best available options.
Will Jayden Daniels be the next C.J. Stroud?
Could a sophomore slump be in store for last season’s Offensive Rookie of the Year?
Stroud won the honor two years ago after throwing 23 touchdowns and five interceptions in the regular season. Last year, he struggled, throwing 12 interceptions while taking 52 sacks.

Daniels excelled as a dual-threat weapon for the Commanders in 2024, throwing for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns with 891 yards and six scores on the ground. Like Stroud, he led his team to the playoffs in his first NFL season, but some fear the 24-year-old passer will regress with Washington.
"I'm afraid that is the team that is going to have the quarterback hit the sophomore slump, and now you have invested in all these older guys and you are not really building a team anymore, you are just adding pieces," one NFL executive told The Athletic's Mike Sando. "At some point, you get diminishing returns with all those old guys."
Of course, one of those old guys is former 49er Deebo Samuel, who looks to be the team’s No. 2 receiver behind Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin. If the 29-year-old pass-catcher can bounce back from a subpar 2024 season, Daniels should meet or exceed last year’s numbers.
Who will replace Sam Cosmi?
The Commanders thought enough of Cosmi to give him a four-year, $74M contract extension in November, only to watch their starting right guard go down with an ACL tear in the divisional round of the playoffs. He had surgery on Jan. 28, but there's no timetable on when he'll return.
In the meantime, the team traded for All-Pro left tackle Laremy Tunsil and drafted Josh Conerly Jr., also a left tackle, with the 29th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. General manager Adam Peters has already said Tunsil will start at left tackle, so does that mean Conerly will take Cosmi’s spot?
The 6-foot-5, 311-pound All-American took three snaps at right guard in three years with Oregon. Otherwise, the team could move Andrew Wylie to guard and ask Conerly to play right tackle.
Either way, offensive line coach Bobby Johnson should be thrilled to have an option like Conerly, regardless of where he plays in 2025.
