Despite a lack of progress in extension negotiations, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles made it clear that Baker Mayfield remains firmly in the organization’s long-term plans.

Speaking after Thursday’s OTA session, Bowles said there is “absolutely no question” that he wants Mayfield to continue leading the franchise beyond the 2026 season.

The quarterback enters the final year of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed in 2024. While both sides have expressed interest in a new deal, Mayfield recently acknowledged that negotiations have not advanced as quickly as he had hoped.

Mayfield Focused on Football Despite Uncertainty

Mayfield and his agent, Tom Mills, have publicly stated they would prefer to finalize an extension before training camp begins later this summer. If an agreement isn’t reached by then, the quarterback plans to pause negotiations and concentrate solely on the upcoming season.

That approach would leave Mayfield on track to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027, although discussions could resume after the season.

According to Bowles, none of the contract uncertainty has affected his quarterback’s approach.

He described Mayfield as a consummate professional who remains fully committed to the team’s preparations, adding that the business side of football has never interfered with the veteran’s performance.

Buccaneers Continue to Believe in Their Quarterback

Mayfield revitalized his career in Tampa Bay after arriving on a one-year prove-it deal in 2023. Since taking over as the starter following Tom Brady’s retirement, he has guided the Buccaneers to consecutive NFC South titles and compiled a 27-24 record.

His leadership and production have convinced the organization that he remains the right player to build around.

Bowles emphasized that both the team and Mayfield value the partnership, expressing confidence that contract matters will eventually work themselves out.

Strong OTA Showing Highlights Mayfield’s Mindset

Thursday’s practice provided another example of Mayfield’s focus. During seven-on-seven drills, he connected with veteran receiver Chris Godwin Jr. for consecutive touchdown passes, showcasing the chemistry that has helped fuel Tampa Bay’s offense.

Following practice, Mayfield also participated in the Buccaneers’ annual “Color & Cut Funds the Cure” event supporting the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Young cancer survivors sprayed his hair bright red during the fundraiser, and the quarterback appeared relaxed and upbeat throughout the event.

Bowles pointed to that same attitude as evidence that contract talks have not become a distraction.

While negotiations remain ongoing, the Buccaneers’ head coach left little doubt about where the organization stands. In his eyes, Mayfield is not just Tampa Bay’s current quarterback, but the player he hopes will continue leading the franchise for years to come.
