While the Baltimore Ravens suffered a 13-10 defeat against the Cleveland Browns, there were still some positives to take away, including the continued emergence of linebacker Trenton Simpson.
According to Pro Football Focus, Simpson received a 90.2 overall defensive grade against Cleveland, the highest of any Ravens defender. His 90.6 coverage grade was also the best of his career, providing another encouraging sign of his development into an important piece of Baltimore’s defense.
Simpson has already demonstrated his ability to contribute as a pass rusher and run defender, but against Cleveland, his coverage ability was particularly impressive. Across 14 coverage snaps, he allowed just one reception for four yards.
That reception came in the fourth quarter, with Cleveland trailing by seven and threatening to score. Deshaun Watson dropped back and found running back Jaleel McLaughlin on a short checkdown. Simpson reacted quickly, closing in on McLaughlin after dropping a bit deeper in zone coverage and bringing him down for a modest four-yard gain. It was not the most glamorous play, but it demonstrated the recognition and quick reaction time that have made Simpson so effective this season.
Simpson currently holds a 79.9 overall PFF grade, ranking third among linebackers. His playing time has been somewhat limited, so it remains to be seen whether he can maintain that level of production with a larger workload. Nevertheless, through six games, Simpson has emerged as one of Baltimore’s most productive defenders and is showing signs of developing into the player the Ravens envisioned when they drafted him.
