J.J. McCarthy’s NFL career has not gone the way the Minnesota Vikings envisioned. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus, then struggled with injuries and inconsistent play in 2025. Now, after Minnesota signed Kyler Murray, his future with the franchise is once again uncertain.

McCarthy started 10 games last season, completing 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He entered training camp competing with Murray for the starting job but ultimately lost that battle.

Another setback came when an ankle injury kept him out of Friday’s preseason finale against the Denver Broncos.

McCarthy’s injury was initially described as minor, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Monday that he believes it is a multi-week injury (via The Pat McAfee Show).

Amid that uncertainty, the Vikings announced Wednesday that they had signed quarterback Max Brosmer, wide receiver Dillon Bell, running back DeeJay Dallas and outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

Minnesota initially waived Brosmer after keeping four quarterbacks on its 53-man roster, but brought him back after he cleared waivers. That gives the Vikings another quarterback option while McCarthy deals with his ankle injury.
