Coming off their best season in almost 15 years, the Buffalo Sabres are tasked with taking another step forward in 2026-27. How they get there will depend on the moves made by general manager Jarmo Kekalainen. If the rumors are to be believed, he will be active in the trade market.
One of the avenues he could pursue in that regard is dealing young netminder Devon Levi. After being labeled the team’s goalie of the future, it appears that he has fallen out of favor. If the Sabres do decide to move on from him, these are a few destinations that could make sense.
The Florida Panthers’ 2025-26 season felt like an anomaly. They were riddled with major injuries, a key factor in their missing the playoffs after three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Finals, and a pair of Cup wins.
Now, the Panthers have serious questions in net. Veteran Sergei Bobrovsky is a free agent and re-signing him isn’t out of the question, especially given the fact that he will come down from his $10 million-per-season tag.
The Panthers could look to pair a young goalie with the veteran for a season and Levi would be a great choice. Being able to learn from and share the net with Bobrovsky could be wonderful for Levi’s development.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Edmonton Oilers need a goalie. They took a shot at the beginning of the 2025-26 season, swapping out Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jarry. To say that it had “mixed results” would be an understatement.
The Oilers aren’t moving on from Jarry, but adding a goalie like Levi could make a ton of sense. Putting him in a tandem would take some pressure off Jarry, who has a notorious injury history, while giving him time to ease into a full-time position.
The problem is: what could the Oilers possibly give back? The Sabres aren’t as interested in picks and prospects as they once were, not that the Oilers have much in the way of either. And there is zero chance the Sabres would have any interest in the one piece the Oilers want to move.
The Blues are perhaps the most interesting team on the list because there are a series of dominos that could fall this offseason. They have already moved some pieces but there are chips that could move or stay right where they are, namely Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou, and Colton Parayko.
Goaltender Jordan Binnington’s name has been tossed around a lot. If he is shipped out, Levi to the Blues could make a lot of season, especially if Kekalainen is interested in taking a serious swing at Thomas again.
With Binnington out of the way, Levi could potentially become a tandem starter with Joel Hofer. Given Hofer’s status as a restricted free agent in 2027, it could be the perfect opportunity to audition a guy like Levi and see what he can do.
Though nothing is set in stone, it feels like the time for both sides to move on. The Sabres have a few trade chips they could potentially package in a larger deal, especially if Alex Tuch walks away via free agency this summer.
Levi seems to have the ability to be a solid NHL goaltender but there just isn’t room in Buffalo for him any longer. If he can be moved for a useful piece, he will at least be remembered fondly going out the door.
