Adam Johnson of the Nottingham Panthers was killed by the skate blade of Matt Petgrave one-year ago today during a game in the EIHL.
Since that time, there has been an investigation into Johnson's death to determine whether or not this is worthy of a manslaughter conviction. Overall, this situation is unprecedented. When things like this happen on the ice, they are considered to be tragic accidents. However, in this case, there are some doubts about whether or not this was even possible.
Having said that, Petgrave has received bail on five separate occasions. His bail runs out in a few weeks, and may are confused with the case. Law Professor Mark Jones recently spoke on it and explained why things are taking so long.
'It's a really unusual case in just about every aspect. The difficulty here is trying to actually find anything that could prove this beyond reasonable doubt.'
On the one-year anniversary of Johnson's passing, the Nottingham Panthers put out a statement, paying homage to their former player. It is clear that the team misses Johnson dearly, as do all of the fans.
'A year ago today, Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson tragically lost his life during an Elite League Challenge Cup game. The thoughts of everyone connected with the Elite League continue to be with Adam's family, friends and teammates.
The entire Elite League dearly miss Adam and we will never forget him.'
The investigation into Johnson's passing will continue, although there is no telling what will happen next. If anything, there are more questions that answers at this point.
