Calgary Flames Free Agency Frenzy Recap

The Calgary Flames had a relatively tame opening day for free agency. The majority of pending free agents walked out the door, with the Flames having an excess of players. UFA’s staying put were Joel Hanley, with Clark Bishop signing the day before.

Who did the Calgary Flames sign?

The Flames signed two different players on July 1st: defenceman Nick Cicek and goaltender Ivan Prosvetov. Cicek is a 25-year-old defenceman who most recently played for Adler Mannheim in the DEL. Prosvetov is a 26-year-old goalie with 24 games to his name. This past season, Prosvetov played for CSKA Moscow.

Nick Cicek – D

Cicek last played in the NHL in the 2022–23 season for the San Jose Sharks. That was Cicek’s only NHL season, and in his 16 games he registered zero goals and four assists. Cicek most likely won’t be on the big league roster next season, barring an injury. He will almost certainly be down in the AHL playing for the Calgary Wranglers, improving their defence.

Ivan Prosvetov – G

Prosvetov’s last NHL game was during the 2023–24 season. Prosvetov produced a 3.16 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. His only season playing with the Colorado Avalanche after spending his entire career in the Arizona Coyotes organisation. Prosvetov played exceptionally well in Russia, posting a .920 save percentage and a 2.32 goals against average.

Flames that walked in Free Agency

Multiple Flames left in the offseason. Dan Vladar became the backup once again behind Dustin Wolf during his outstanding rookie year. Vladar, wanting more of a starter’s role, went to Philadelphia, where they need goaltending. Vladar signed a 2-year deal with an AAV of $3.35M.

Jonathan Aspirot, who played for the Wranglers, left in free agency for the Boston Bruins. Aspirot signed a one-year contract for a league minimum $775K. Just as he did in Calgary, Aspirot will most likely spend most of his time in the AHL for the Providence Bruins.

There are multiple Flames still out on the market that seemingly won’t be making a return to the Saddledome. Forwards Anthony Mantha, Kevin Rooney, and Martin Frk are all still available. As for the defencemen, Tyson Barrie and Jarred Tinordi are the ones still on the market. Then, in between the pipes, both Connor Murphy and Waltteri Ignatjew were not given qualifying offers and became UFA’s as a result. Igntajew will play next season in Sweden.

Where do the Flames go?

While it was always known that Calgary wasn’t going to do too much during free agency, management didn’t even make any trades. Rasmus Andersson has still been the centre of rumours, and the top defenceman available via signing and trade. An excess of wingers has also stopped the team from getting younger and properly changing the team’s foundation. With multiple young players still available via trade, Calgary could still make a move soon enough.
