Washington Capitals starting goaltender Logan Thompson sustained an injury in Tuesday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Kings. He was slow to get up after a save two minutes into the second period and seemed to be nursing his left leg. Thompson stayed in the game and allowed four goals on 25 shots. Now, Thompson won’t skate at Wednesday’s practice and officially carries a day-to-day designation per Sammi Silber of The Associated Press.
This news will leave Washington with one healthy goaltender – Charlie Lindgren – on the NHL roster. Their next game is not until Saturday, which could be ample time for Thompson to work back to full health. If not, Washington is likely to utilize an emergency recall to bring Mitchell Gibson up to the NHL roster. Lindgren would move into a starting role, providing a chance to build on a 1-1-0 record and .897 save percentage (Sv%) to start the season.
Lindgren has served a key role in Washington’s goalie room for the last five seasons. He served as the starter in 2023-24 and posted a career year – marked by a 25-16-7 record and .911 Sv% in 50 games. He moved into the backup role, behind Thompson, in 2024-25 but still managed a winning record and .896 Sv% in 39 games.
Thompson has graduated to the outright starting role. He boasts a 4-3-0 record and .901 Sv% through seven games this season. Those marks come after a career-year last season, where Thompson posted a 31-21-6 record and .912 Sv% – both career-bests – through 58 appearances. He went on to finish fourth in 2026 Vezina Trophy voting. Thomspon has earned the majority of starts when healthy, while Lindgren offers a capable alternative.
In a separate move, Washington has also assigned forward Jonny Brodzinski to the AHL’s Hershey Bears. This move could indicate that Pierre-Luc Dubois is nearing a return after missing the last five games with an illness. Dubois scored four points in as many games before getting knocked out of the lineup. He missed time throughout last season as well, closing the year with just 19 points in 29 games. Dubois will bring a major boost to the Capitals’ lineup once he’s back to full health. Meanwhile, Brodzinski will return to the minors, where he has already recorded five points in four games this season.
