Team Canada named its 25-player men’s hockey roster for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games on Wednesday, making some adjustments from the roster that won the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.
While championship-winning goaltender Jordan Binnington remains on the roster, Hockey Canada announced it will bring Washington Capitals’ starter Logan Thompson as well as the LA Kings’ netminder, Darcy Kuemper.
On Wednesday’s Olympic roster reaction episode of Daily Faceoff Live, host Tyler Yaremchuk was joined by Daily Faceoff managing editor and senior writer, Matt Larkin, to break down whether Canada could use its third netminder.
Yaremchuk: Goaltending-wise, not really a big surprise here…if you get to your third goalie, you’re probably hooped, so who cares? But there’s a legitimate chance, based on his play this year, and we’ll see what happens when they actually get to Italy, that Jordan Binnington is in the press box for some of these games.
Larkin: And there’s a history of that at the Olympics with Canada, right? We saw in 2002 and 2010, when the goaltender who started the journey wasn’t the one who finished it. I’m pretty happy with this goaltending battery for Canada. I know some people want Binnington off this team, and he’s been terrible this year.
I looked it up earlier today. There are 62 goalies who have played 10 or more games this year. He’s 60th in goals saved above expected per 60. He’s been one of the worst goalies in the league this year, and at the same time, he was pretty much etched in stone that he’s going to be on this team when he showed up big in that overtime against Team USA.
It doesn’t mean he’s going to be the starter and but to me, Logan Thompson is the exciting pick, because there was all this chatter leading up about Thompson and his supposed rift going back to his Vegas Golden Knights days with Bruce Cassidy and Pete DeBoer, assistant coaches that would come into play and push him off the team. He wasn’t invited to the camp in the summer. He didn’t even get a call last year for 4 Nations, but it seems like Canada has grown up a little bit and put that aside.
If there is supposed to be some dressing room friction with Logan Thompson. It’s almost as if a dressing room with Brad Marchand and Drew Doughty, Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon can push that out of the way. I don’t think they galaxy-brained this roster. Thompson’s been arguably the best goalie in the league for the past 365 days, and I think that’s the pick for Canada.
