The Adirondack Thunder and Maine Mariners wrapped up their home-and-home weekend series on Saturday evening in Portland. Adirondack would make only one change, as Jeremy Brodeur would make his first start of the season for the Thunder. For the Mariners, they also made a change in net, with Brad Arvanitis getting his second start of the season. The Mariners also had three new faces in the lineup as Ty Gallagher came down from Providence. Maine signed Zachary Jones and Ben Raymond to help as the Mariners lost two more players to injuries on Friday Night. Ty Cheveldayoff, Jackson Stewart, Sebastian Vidmar, and Ethan Pearson all joined the IR on Saturday.
Adirondack would come out strong to start the game, with their first big chance coming less than five minutes into the period. Jeremy Hanzel would go coast to coast but would be stopped by Arvanitis as the game stayed scoreless. The Thunder would outshoot the Mariners 13-7 in the opening period, but neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20. Adirondack would finally break through Arvanitis at the 9:30 mark as Brannon McManus made a lead pass who fed Dan Ebrahim who took a gorgeous wrist shot for his first of the season. Less than three mintues later, the Mariners found themselves with a five-on-three for 27 seconds, but couldn’t take advantage as the Thunder. Despite being outshot 15-9 in the second, the Thunder had a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
Maine got on the board at 5:28 on a weird difflection by Lynden McCallum who netted his first of the season after a lengthy video review. It would be a double wammy for the Thunder as after the goal a scrum accured and Jacob Graves ended up with the extra two mintues. Adirondack killed off the penalty, as they finished the night a perfect four for four on the PK. It would be the PP that hurt the Thunder as Linus Hemstrom got a short-handed breakaway and beat Brodeur to give Maine the 3-2 lead. 41 second later, on that same powerplay, it would be a shot from Brannon McManus that would be tipped in by Justin Taylor to tie the game up. That was enough to extend the Thunder point streak to three games and the Mariners to four as we headed to OT for a second straight night.
For the second straight night, the Thunder got time on the PP as Jacob Perreault took a high-sticking penalty at 1:32. However, Adirondack wouldn’t be able to take advantage. The Thunder outshot the Mariners 7-6 in the extra frame, but for the second straight night we headed to a shootout. Just like on Friday, Brannon McManus found the back of the net in the opening round. However, it was Ebrahim’s goal in the third round that send Adirondack out of Maine with the extra point.
Adirondack will now head to Norfolk to begin a three-game set vs Nrfolk Admirals next Friday Night.
