The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have signed goaltender Josh Boyko ahead of their morning game today against South Carolina. The 28-year-old brings professional experience, familiarity with the league, and a well-traveled career.

Experience Across the ECHL

Boyko is no stranger to the ECHL landscape. Over the course of his professional career, he has suited up for the Maine Mariners, Reading Royals, Idaho Steelheads, Worcester Railers, and Atlanta Gladiators. During the 2023–24 season, he appeared in 13 games with Atlanta while also seeing time in Worcester on loan. Earlier stops included time in Maine, Reading, and Idaho, including postseason action with the Steelheads.

The 2022–23 season saw him split time between the Maine Mariners (ECHL) and Peoria Rivermen (SPHL), while also receiving loan assignments to Kalamazoo, Reading, and Idaho.

ECHL Regular Season Breakdown

  • Maine Mariners (2022–23): 4 GP – .901
  • Reading Royals (2022–23): 2 GP – .931
  • Idaho Steelheads (2022–23): 3 GP – .881
  • Worcester Railers (2023–24): 3 GP – .888
  • Atlanta Gladiators (2023–24): 13 GP – .895

Across those stops, Boyko has appeared in 25 ECHL regular-season games, while also making one postseason appearance with the Steelheads. His time in the league has included both spot starts and extended stretches, allowing him to adapt to different defensive systems and competitive environments. That familiarity with the ECHL’s pace and travel demands gives Greenville a goaltender who understands the structure of the league and what is required to compete.

Strong 2025–26 Season in Macon

Boyko’s 2025–26 campaign with the Macon Mayhem is notable as one of his strongest professional stretches. In 28 appearances, he posted a 2.47 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage, along with one shutout.

Several performances during the season emphasize his consistency and capability to handle demanding situations.

On October 25 against Huntsville, Boyko stopped 36 of 39 shots for a .923 save percentage despite the loss. On November 28 in Knoxville, he faced 43 shots and turned aside 41, finishing with a .953 save percentage in a 2–0 defeat. A heavy workload performance that kept his team within reach.

December and January featured some of his most efficient outings. On December 6 against Huntsville, he made 30 saves on 31 shots (.968) in a 1–0 victory. On December 26 in Birmingham, he stopped 33 of 34 shots over 64:42 in an overtime game, posting a .971 save percentage. He followed that with a 33-save effort in a 65-minute overtime win against Fayetteville on January 3 (.943).

His most eye-catching performance came January 8 in Knoxville, where Boyko recorded a 31-save shutout with a perfect 1.000 save percentage. He later capped off another strong overtime effort on February 14 in Birmingham, making 40 saves on 42 shots (.952) in a 65-minute outing.

Across multiple overtime games and high-shot situations, Boyko demonstrated durability and steadiness, attributes that translate well to the ECHL level.

Collegiate Foundation at Aurora University

Before turning professional, Boyko spent five seasons at Aurora University (NCAA Division III), steadily developing his game and earning significant starts. He finished his final collegiate season with a .915 save percentage, displaying strong rebound control and positional discipline.

What Greenville Gains

For Greenville, the signing provides additional depth and flexibility in the crease. Goaltending depth is critical throughout the ECHL season. Boyko’s experience across multiple organizations gives the Swamp Rabbits a goaltender who already understands the league’s pace and structure.

At 5-foot-10 and catching left, Boyko relies on positioning and competitiveness rather than size alone. His recent production in Macon suggests he arrives in Greenville with certainty and momentum. Boyko’s addition offers stability and competition for the Swamp Rabbits between the pipes.
