In this week’s edition of Calgary Flames News & Rumours, trade speculation continues to surround Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman as the deadline looms. In other news, Jonathan Huberdeau’s season has come to an end due to a hip injury. Meanwhile, Martin Pospisil had some familiar linemates when practicing with Slovakia ahead of the Winter Olympics. Last, but not least, Ryan Lomberg took a shot at Edmonton Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry last week.

Kadri and Coleman Continuing to Pop Up in Trade Rumours

As Flames fans are well aware, trading Nazem Kadri this season won’t be an easy task. The 35-year-old is not only having a rough season by his standards, but is under contract with a $7 million cap hit through the 2028-29 campaign. That said, it’s clear that he is still an immense talent, and one that NHL insider Frank Seravalli still thinks could be moved ahead of the trade deadline.

“Vincent Trocheck, Nazem Kadri, Blake Coleman,” Seravalli said on Oilers Now on names he’s watching once the Olympic trade freeze ends. “Those are three names that I’d throw you right off the hop.”

Trading Blake Coleman may be the easier option. The 34-year-old commands just $4.9 million, and has just one additional seasoon remaining on his deal. Through 44 games this season, he’s managed 13 goals and 21 points.

Huberdeau’s Season Has Come to an End

The 2025-26 season was one that Jonathan Huberdeau will like to forget. The 32-year-old, who had struggled through his first two seasons with the Calgary Flames, had a solid bounce back in 2024-25. His 28 goals and 62 points were nothing to marvel over, but were a major improvement over what he’d provided in each of the two prior seasons.

Huberdeau was unable to keep things trending in the right direction, however, and was back in the bad graces of the fan base. He managed just 10 goals and 25 points in 50 games prior to an announcement last week that his season has come to an end.

“After extensive evaluation, this was determined to be the best course of action for Jonathan’s long-term health and performance,” Flames general manager (GM) Craig Conroy said. “While it is difficult to lose a player of his caliber, our priority is ensuring he is fully healthy moving forward.”

Huberdeau will be undergoing hip resurfacing surgery. Other players have undergone the procedure, though few have been able to have success upon returning. That said, the Flames did say that they expect him to be ready for the start of the 2026-27 season.

Pospisil Gearing Up for Olympics

Up until roughly a month ago, it didn’t appear that Martin Pospisil was going to be able to suit up in the Olympics. The 26-year-old was one of six players named to Slovakia’s roster in the summer, but was at risk of missing the tournament after suffering an undisclosed injury in the preseason. He was able to return to the Flames lineup last month, however, and is in Italy gearing up to play on the biggest stage of his career.

Pospisil was able to skate with his Slovakian teammates on Monday, and was spotted on a line with two players he has familiarity with. San Jose Sharks winger Pavol Regenda, as well as HC Dynamo Pardubice’s Milos Kelemen served as Pospisil’s linemates. The trio played on a line together for Slovakia at the 2024 World Championship.

Lomberg Throws Shade at Jarry

Ryan Lomberg has really enjoyed playing against the Edmonton Oilers this season. The 31-year-old, not known for providing offence, has just four goals in 2025-26. Two of them, however, have come against the Flames’ provincial rival.

After Lomberg’s first goal against the Oilers in late December, he took a shot at Alec Regula for gifting him a pass up the middle of the ice. This time, Lomberg chose to take a shot at goaltender Tristan Jarry, referring to him as “Swiss cheese.”

These types of antics are what make Flames fans love Lomberg, who signed as a free agent with the organization ahead of the 2024-25 season. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) at seasons end, but could be in line for a short and inexpensive extension given what he provides both on and off the ice.

Looking Ahead for the Flames

The NHL is currently on a break due to the Olympics, meaning there are no Flames games in the near future. Their first action after the break on February 26 in a road tilt versus the San Jose Sharks. They will then take on the LA Kings two nights later, before ending their week with a game versus the Anaheim Ducks.
