We’re officially on Porter Martone watch.
Following Michigan State’s overtime loss to Wisconsin, Martone’s NCAA season has come to an end—and all signs now point toward the Philadelphia Flyers closing in on their prized prospect. Flyers beat reporter Jackie Spiegel is among those reporting that the Flyers and Martone are close to a deal. “According to a source, Porter Martone’s entry-level contract with the Flyers should be done this afternoon.”
Kevin Weekes also reported that a deal is expected imminently, and Elliotte Friedman noted on Saturday’s Headlines report that things are moving in the right direction.
The sixth overall pick has been nothing short of dominant in his freshman campaign, finishing with 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 35 games—firmly establishing himself as one of the top first-year players in college hockey.
If the deal gets done on Sunday, it will mean that Martone and the Flyers got things together quickly. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, given his excitement to be drafted by the organization.
There’s even buzz that Martone could be in the building when Philadelphia hosts Dallas, fueling speculation that an announcement is right around the corner.
Martone’s NCAA chapter is closed—and his NHL journey is about to begin.
