Jake Oettinger ranked fifth among NHL goaltenders by NHL Network as former goalie Cory Schneider praises his talent but warns more is expected in the playoffs.
The NHL Network has released its annual list of the league's top 10 goaltenders, and Dallas Stars fans should be encouraged by where Jake Oettinger landed. The 26-year-old netminder climbed three spots from last year, ranking fifth overall heading into the 2025-26 season.
It's a recognition of Oettinger's consistency and talent, but it also comes with a reminder of what's still expected from him when the games matter most.
Among the panelists was former Jennings Trophy winner Cory Schneider, who spoke at length about Oettinger's place among the NHL's elite.
Schneider first acknowledged Oettinger's struggles in the postseason, noting that head coach Pete DeBoer shouldered much of the blame after the Stars once again fell short in the Western Conference Final. Still, he was quick to emphasize that Oettinger needs to seize the opportunity when Dallas pushes deep into the playoffs.
"While DeBoer took the blame for the team's inability to put it all together in the Western Conference Finals, Oettinger needs to capitalize and deliver for the Stars in the playoffs by getting them to the finals."
At the same time, Schneider clarified that his comments weren't meant to tear Oettinger down.
"I don't think I am trying to hammer or be critical of him. I think we're saying this because I believe he can be the best goaltender in the NHL and if you're that talented and as good as he is, then more is expected of you."
The Stars' core is built around players like Jason Robertson, Miro Heiskanen, and Wyatt Johnston, but Oettinger remains the anchor that will ultimately determine whether Dallas finally breaks through to the Stanley Cup Final.
His new ranking reflects the respect he has earned across the league, but also the weight on his shoulders as he enters his prime.
As NHL.com has noted in past features, Oettinger's consistency has already put him among the game's elite, but to cement his place at the very top, he needs that defining playoff run.
Personally, I think the recognition is deserved, and the timing feels right for Oettinger to take the final step that his critics are waiting for.
