The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers entered Saturday night tied 2-2 in the Stanley Cup Final. With the Oilers playing on home ice, they had a prime opportunity to regain momentum. However, the Panthers' championship grit shined through — led by midseason addition Brad Marchand.
Florida dominated from the start, holding a multi-goal lead from the end of the first period and ultimately sealing a 5-2 victory to take a 3-2 series lead. They now have a chance to close it out at home on Tuesday night and capture their second straight Stanley Cup title.
That said, this would be Marchand’s first title in a Panthers uniform after the Boston Bruins made the bold decision to trade the 37-year-old at the NHL trade deadline — a move that’s turned into a massive pickup for Florida.
Marchand scored two goals on Saturday night, bringing his Stanley Cup Final total to six through five games. After his first goal, he made history by joining legend Mario Lemieux as the only other player in the last 59 years to score five goals in multiple Stanley Cup Finals — the first coming in 2011 with the Bruins.
With his second goal of the night, Marchand set the NHL record for most road goals in a Stanley Cup Final with five. His six goals are the most by any player in a single Stanley Cup Final since Esa Tikkanen in 1988.
