Jack Roslovic’s contract with Oilers contains curious trade clause

The Edmonton Oilers officially registered Jack Roslovic’s contract with the NHL Thursday, bringing his one-year, $1.5-million deal to life.

Defenceman Jake Walman was placed on the injured reserve to make room on the roster, opening up the possibility for Roslovic to play as soon as Saturday.

And with his contract getting registered, PuckPedia got the scoop on an interesting trade clause in the deal. It’s a full no-movement clause that, on November 1st, becomes a four-team trade list. Effectively, it’s a one-month trial run for Roslovic and the Oilers, where if things work, great, and if not, there’s an option for the team to potentially recoup an asset.

November 1st is an interesting date for the Oilers beyond just this new trade clause, as it’s also the date that Zach Hyman will be eligible to return from the long-term injured reserve. The Oilers will have some tough roster decisions to make around that time, as when he, Mattias Janmark and Jake Walman return from injury, the team could be up to three players over the active roster limit of 23.

Roslovic will have some time to get looks up and down the lineup. As Jason Gregor wrote yesterday, he’ll likely get a shot alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl at some point, and that makes sense. After all, Roslovic’s 19 five-on-five goals for the Carolina Hurricanes last year were six more than Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho, who ranked second on the team with 13.

While he had a career high five-on-five shooting percentage of 16.8, he also generated a career high .77 individual expected goals per hour, a career high 7.53 individual scoring chances per hour and a career high 3.27 individual scoring chances per hour. He got to the right areas of the ice to score and was rewarded for doing so.

Time will tell where he truly fits on this roster, but the Oilers made another low-risk bet that could pay off for them.
