Kraken Place Four Players On Waivers

The Seattle Kraken made sweeping cuts to their training camp roster, bringing their lineup down to 25 players well ahead of the September 28th deadline. Their series of cuts included four players who must clear waivers to reach the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds. They are forwards Jon-Randall Avon, John Hayden, and Logan Morrison; as well as goaltender Victor Ostman.

All four Kraken on waivers spent the bulk of their 2025-26 season with the Firebirds. Morrison led the team in scoring with 29 goals and 61 points in 68 games. It was a small breakout for the third-year pro who managed 41 and 42 points in his first two seasons with Coachella Valley, respectively. The 24-year-old Morrison made his NHL debut with a four-game stint in the Kraken lineup in the 2023-24 season but didn’t manage any scoring. A return to strong production in the minors could quickly return him to Seattle’s depth ranks.

Avon and Hayden both scored 24 points last season, through 45 and 67 games accordingly. Avon is headed into his fourth professional season and second in the Kraken organization. He has taken small steps forward each season and could fight for a second-line role with the Firebirds next season. Hayden has been more routinely rotated into the NHL, combining for 272 NHL games across five different teams since turning pro in 2017. He fills a pest role everywhere he goes and recorded a career-high 127 penalty minutes in Coachella Valley last season. Hayden should return to a gritty role with the Firebirds, until the Kraken need a bit more edge, next season.

Ostman is the lone goalie on Monday’s waivers. If he clears, he will return to a Coachella Valley lineup where he filled the de facto starting role last season. Ostman played in 36 games – one more than Niklas Kokko. He recorded a 17-15-3 record and .906 save percentage in those minutes. It was a strong output in Ostman’s AHL rookie season. Seattle rewarded him with his first NHL start in April. He allowed two goals on 35 shots and recorded a loss in that performance. Ostman will enter the 2026-27 season comfortably ranked third on Seattle’s goalie depth chart, behind Joey Daccord and Philipp Grubauer, who both carry a cap hit at-or-above $5MM.
