The hot topic right now with the Montreal Canadiens is certainly star defenseman Lane Hutson’s next contract. Everyone is anxiously awaiting the Habs’ #48 to sign his next contract, because we’re all anxious to learn that Hutson will be a Canadiens player for a long time to come (if he signs long-term, of course).
We’ve been on the edge of our seats since yesterday, when Jonathan Bernier claimed that a deal was imminent between Hutson and the Habs. It’s big news, but in the end, it may just be a false rumour.
Why do I say that? Because the NHL’s most trusted and connected tipster, Elliotte Friedman, has said he doesn’t believe it.
Elliotte Friedman on Friday on @FAN590: “There was a report today that maybe it was close, getting closer with Lane Hutson, but as far as I can tell, I don’t believe that to be true. ” https://t.co/X7QVv6KjND –

Indeed, that’s what Friedman said on the latest episode of The FAN Hockey Show podcast.
The renowned tipster didn’t elaborate on the subject, but he was clear in explaining that from what he hears, there’s nothing imminent in the Hutson case. However, Friedman recalled the Mason McTavish file, when nothing was imminent, on the contrary, and finally, a phone call changed everything.
So, a new contract for Hutson could also fall through at any second, but for now, if the most reliable person in the hockey world is to be trusted, there’s nothing imminent.
The sooner Hutson signs, the sooner he’ll be ableto concentrate on playing hockey and doing what he does best: flying on the ice.
Look – Hutson will agree to a contract that pays him what he’s worth and not ask for a ridiculous amount given his RFA status, but don’t expect them to accept a low-end offer because of the “culture” Hughes has built. That ship has sailed
