Maple Leafs' John Tavares Joins Wayne Gretzky in Exclusive Four-Player Club

John Tavares made NHL history on Saturday night, becoming just the fourth player ever to record 500 points with two different teams.

The milestone came during the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 4–3 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken at Scotiabank Arena.

Tavares scored two goals in the game, reaching 500 points as a Maple Leaf and joining Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Ron Francis in one of the league’s rarest statistical clubs.

“I didn’t know that,” Tavares said about joining those three NHL legends. “It’s hard to process right now, considering how the game finished for us. Obviously, being able to play for two great franchises and having the success I’ve had, I think that speaks volumes for my teammates, coaches and ... everyone who has been part of the journey.”

The 35-year-old center now has 225 goals and 275 assists in 521 regular-season games with Toronto. Before signing with the Leafs in 2018, Tavares spent nine seasons with the New York Islanders, collecting 621 points in 669 games.

Combined, Tavares sits at 1,121 career points through 1,190 regular-season appearances. The former No. 1 overall pick has also been a two-time Hart Trophy finalist and a six-time All-Star.

Saturday’s performance marked another reminder of Tavares' consistency, with the veteran center topping 80 points five times in his career and twice with Toronto, including a 47-goal season in 2018–19.

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube credited Tavares for his professionalism and steady production.

“It’s an awesome feat he accomplished,” Berube said. “It’s his preparation and willingness to play and compete. He doesn’t take nights off. That’s why he’s able to accomplish what he’s been able to.”

Despite the historic night, Tavares focused more on the team’s missed opportunity against Seattle, as the Leafs dropped to 3-2-1 in six games.

“We kind of gave that one away,” Tavares said. “But I’ve really enjoyed the journey and just want to keep going.”
