Michael Hutchinson Announces Retirement

According to an announcement from the Winnipeg Jets, goaltender Michael Hutchinson has hung up his skates. Hutchinson spent 11 years in the NHL with the Jets, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Detroit Red Wings.

Hutchinson, 36, was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins with the 77th overall pick of the 2008 NHL Draft. Hutchinson spent a few years with the Bruins organization before signing as an unrestricted free agent with the Jets in 2013.

At the time, Connor Hellebuyck had not yet captured the crease in Winnipeg. Hutchinson played in a backup role behind Ondřej Pavelec before finally working in the same capacity behind Hellebuyck a few years later. In his five years with the franchise, Hutchinson managed a 43-39-11 record in 102 games with a .910 SV% and 2.65 GAA.

Then came the nomadic period of Hutchinson’s career. In the next five seasons, Hutchinson played for five different clubs, though he did enjoy a relatively extended stay in the Maple Leafs organization. By now, Hutchinson had become a third-string netminder at best, managing a 14-23-7 record in 52 games with a .888 SV% and 3.52 GAA.

After his time in the Red Wings organization, Hutchinson spent one additional season overseas with the Finnish Liiga’s SaiPa, but he hasn’t played professionally since the 2024-25 campaign. All in all, Hutchinson finishes with a career record of 57-62-18 in 154 games with a .902 SV% and 2.94 GAA.
