Montréal Canadiens Extend Lane Hutson

The Montréal Canadiens have announced that they’ve signed defenseman Lane Hutson to an eight-year extension worth $70.8 million with an AAV of $8.85 million per season. Hutson is in the final year of his entry-level contract. This extension will kick in for the 2026-27 season and carry him through the 2033-34 season. There’s no doubt that getting Hutson signed for under $9 million a season is a huge win for the Canadiens moving forward. For the Canadiens, they now have their top two defensemen locked up through the 2029-30 season after signing Noah Dobson in the off-season. As expected, Dobson remains the highest-paid player on the Canadiens with an AAV of $9.5 million.

Hutson, 21, is coming off a Calder Trophy-winning season where he put up six goals and 60 assists for 66 points in 82 games. It was the first time a Canadien won the Calder since the late Ken Dryden won it in 1972. Hutson also had five assists in five games during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The second-round pick of the Canadiens also led all rookies in assists and points during the 2024-25 season. Hutson picked up his first point of the 2025-26 season on Saturday Night in a win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Expect Hutson to start finding his stride now that the weight of his contract extension is off his back. The next big extension for the Canadiens will be Patrick Laine. His contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season. Laine is currently making $8.7 million per season.
