In a scary announcement from the Pittsburgh Penguins, forward Benjamin Kindel has been taken to a hospital following a medical episode on the team’s plane. Specifically, the team said:

“The Pittsburgh Penguins team plane returned to the Salt Lake City International Airport today shortly after takeoff due to a medical episode involving forward Ben Kindel. Team physician, Dr. Dharmesh Vyas of UPMC, as well as the team’s medical staff were on board and immediately attended to Ben. An ambulance was waiting upon arrival, and he was taken to the University of Utah Hospital for further evaluation. Ben is conscious, alert and in stable condition.

The healthy and safety of our players, as well as the privacy for their families, are our top priority. The team will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Without the full details of what transpired on the plane, it’s inappropriate to speculate. It’s great news that Kindel is alert and stable, though the immediate details are more than concerning. Unfortunately, even in terrible circumstances like this, our role is to address the on-ice angle.

Kindel, 19, is in his second season with the Penguins organization after being selected with the 11th overall pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. Considered a reach at the time, Kindel silenced the doubters with a strong rookie performance. Finishing ninth in Calder Trophy voting, Kindel scored 17 goals and 35 points in 77 games while averaging 15:04 of ice time per game. Furthermore, his 53.3% CorsiFor in all situations was second on the team behind Erik Karlsson, showing that the team performs better when he is on the ice.

He picked up this season where he left off. Although the team is struggling, Kindel has registered two goals and four points in nine games while having a firmer role in the Penguins’ top six. Still, as much as Pittsburgh appears to appreciate his high motor, Kindel has some things to clean up on defense. He finished with a -58 turnover ratio last year and is already -6 this season.
