At 12:04 of the first period, Egor Chinakhov gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead with his 10th goal of the season. Parker Wotherspoon made a pass to Evgeni Malkin, who was skating through the neutral zone, from Pittsburgh’s end along the left wall. Malkin carried the puck through the neutral zone and into Ottawa’s end on the right side with Chinakhov on the left before handing the puck over for a wrist shot in the slot.
Michael Amadio tied it 1-1 early in the middle frame when he stole the puck from Malkin and found the back of the net to end his 24-game goal drought, scoring on a wrist shot in the slot. This was his eighth goal of the season.
Tim Stutzle gave the Senators their first lead of the game, 2-1, when he scored with a backhand on a rebound after Arturs Silovs made a glove save on Drake Batherson’s shot on a breakaway at 13:14 of the final frame. This was Stutzle’s 26th goal of the season, as well as his fourth in his past five games. Not long after the second Senators’ tally, Tommy Novak tied it back up 2-2 with his 10th of the season when he put in the rebound of Ryan Shea’s shot from the right circle past Linus Ullmark in the crease with 11:13 on the clock. With 5:08 left to play, Claude Giroux made it 3-2 for Ottawa on his 11th goal of the season. He was tripped by Erik Karlsson while driving to the crease, fell hard into the right post, and lifted the net off its moorings. After review, it was determined that the puck had passed Silovs before the net came off. The Penguins were unsuccessful on a challenge for goaltender interference.
