Player Profile: Logan Cooley

Logan Cooley was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 4, 2004. Cooley has two older brothers who played hockey before him. Cooley took part in the inaugural season of Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Program in 2008. Crosby’s program teaches kids ages 5 to 9 the fundamentals of hockey and offers free hockey equipment. Attending this program at five years old is when Cooley’s passion for the game of hockey took off.

Cooley is a 6’0”, 192 lb. forward who is a left-shot. He began his youth hockey career with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite team. In 69 games played for the Penguins Elite 14U AAA team during the 2018-19 season, Cooley scored 44 goals and added 39 assists. After two seasons with the Penguins Elite team, Cooley joined the United States National Team Development Program. Cooley played two seasons at the USNTDP, scoring 75 points in 51 games played for the U.S. National U18 team during the 2021-22 season.

At the 2021-22 World Junior Championships, Cooley scored five goals and added 11 assists in 11 games played for Team USA. Team USA lost in the quarterfinals of this tournament to Czechia by a score of 4-2. Cooley, one of the goal scorers in the game in which Team USA was eliminated, was disappointed after the loss. “Obviously for the ’02 players, this was their last shot,” said Cooley. “It’s terrible the way it ended. But happy with the way the guys battled and couldn’t complain effort-wise.”

Logan Cooley was drafted by the then Arizona Coyotes with the third overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft out of the United States National Team Development Program. After being drafted by the Coyotes, Logan Cooley played one season of college hockey at the University of Minnesota. In 39 games played for the Gophers during the 2022-23 season, Cooley scored 22 goals and added 38 assists. The question was how he would adjust to the NHL level of hockey.

Playing in all 82 games for the Arizona Coyotes during his first season, Cooley scored 20 goals and added 24 assists. These statistics led Cooley to finish fifth in Calder Trophy voting for the season. Cooley proved himself to be durable, but how would he follow this impressive rookie season, and how would the Utah Hockey Club build on a season that saw them finish in second-to-last place in the Central Division?

Cooley played 75 games for the Utah Hockey Club during the 2024-25 season. In those 75 games, he scored 25 goals and added 40 assists. This was the third-most goals scored for Utah this season. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native showed his offensive talent through the first two seasons in the NHL. With all this evidence in mind, what would be next for Cooley and the Mammoth?
