Curtis Pashelka: San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier said that he is open to signing forwards Maklin Celebrini and Will Smith to contract extensions this offseason. He said there is no rush and it’s fine if they don’t get extensions done in the offseason.
Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News: Macklin Celebrini is contract extension eligible on July 1st, and he said on Saturday that he’s open for anything.
“I’m just open to every possibility. There’s nothing really that goes into it. It goes hand in hand with me. I want to commit to this team and being here. I love it here. I’m open to whatever happens.”
GM Mike Grier said he hasn’t spoken with Celebrini’s agent, Pat Brisson, and added there’s lots of time and no rush.
Celebrini is in line for a huge payday. Kirill Kaprizov has the largest NHL deal at eight years and $17 million per. Leon Draisaitl is up next at $14 million per.
Elliotte Friedman on this 32 Thoughts: The Podcast said that he believes Celebrini’s camp will be looking for three to five years and not seven or eight. The Sharks may be okay with anything other than four years as that would walk him right to unrestricted free agency.
Curtis Pashelka: GM Grier said that pending UFA defenseman Mario Ferraro will likely test free agency, but added he’s not closing the door on bringing any of their pending UFAs back.
Sheng Peng: GM Grier said that they want to bring pending RFA Shakir Mukhamadullin back and that they still believe in him.
Curtis Pashelka: Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky is entering the final year of his contract and said he’ll keep things between him and GM Grier when asked if he’s okay going into the season without an extension.
“I love this organization. I love this area. My family loves it here. I love seeing the Shark Tank (full). There (would be) no better feeling (than) to be the head coach of this team, getting this team back in the playoffs. I can tell you that I can see the passion. I can see how badly people want it. To hopefully deliver that would be a dream come true for myself.”
