Veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins has been a name circulating around trade talks all offseason. But things have started to pick up over the past few weeks around a potential deal.
With Pittsburgh firmly in a rebuild, it could lead them to move Karlsson for some future assets. The Penguins have spoken with multiple teams about a deal, but are likely holding a high asking price for the veteran.
One team that could go after Karlsson is the Ottawa Senators, who would be reuniting with the seven-time All-Star. NHL writer Adam Gertz of Bleacher Report listed Ottawa as a landing spot for the veteran in a recent prediction piece.
"They could still use another big move, and some additional help on the right side of their defense, where the depth chart consists of Artyom Zub, Nick Jensen and newly acquired Jordan Spence.
"Karlsson and the Senators also have an extensive history, with him having played nearly a decade with the team and winning two of his Norris Trophies there," wrote Gretz.
Some around the league have speculated that Karlsson would welcome a return to the Senators, especially since they made the postseason this past year. The veteran could bring some extra firepower to the mix, helping the Senators take that next step forward.
Ottawa could reunite with the star defenseman, and it would be one of the better stories around the league. Karlsson proved that he is still capable of producing at a high level, and he could be a solid addition.
Last season with the Penguins, Karlsson posted 11 goals and 42 assists over 82 games played. This could be a storybook ending for Karlsson if it were to happen, giving him the chance to finish his career with the team, which he started it all with.
