Toronto Marlies lose opening game to Rochester Americans, Borya Valis scores twice

Valis added his second goal of the contest in the third period, with the Marlies down 4-2. The 21-year-old fished out a loose puck and jammed it into the net, but that was the closest the Marlies would get, as the Americans held for a 4-3 victory.

It was an encouraging season debut for Valis, who was impressive during Maple Leafs’ training camp. The Leafs Nation ranked Valis as the 20th-best prospect in the organization and he could quickly rise through the organization if his scoring touch translates from the WHL to the AHL. Valis is a strong skater who likes to power his way to the opposing net, where he has proven more than capable of converting on the quality scoring chances that he creates. He shows some playmaking creativity and problem-solving skills, but he can still try to make too much happen on his own at times, and that will be an area of focus as he continues to develop. Valis doesn’t shy away physically, but he could be more consistent in that regard, and he will have to continue improving his defensive reads at the pro level.

Logan Shaw added the other goal for the Marlies, while Jacob Quillan recorded two assists. Toronto resumes its schedule with its home opener against Rochester on Saturday.
