The Toronto Maple Leafs face another offseason of roster evaluation following a second-round exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Florida Panthers.
With key decisions looming on the expiring contracts of star forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares, a new report from The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta suggests that Toronto may free up additional cap space by cutting ties with two of its veterans.
According to Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs are considering buyouts for forwards Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf.
Both players remain under contract heading into the 2025–26 season, but their roles diminished significantly during the playoffs.
The Maple Leafs currently have just under $25 million in cap space, per PuckPedia. But with the expected negotiations to retain Matthew Knies and perhaps Tavares and/or Marner, more flexibility may be required.
"Toronto may free up even more space if they move, or buy out, David Kampf and/or Calle Jarnkrok, which is under consideration, according to a team source," Pagnotta wrote.
Jarnkrok, 33, appeared in just 19 games this season due to injury. He scored one goal and provided six assists. The center carries a $2.1 million cap hit and has one year left on his deal.
Buying out Jarnkrok would save the Leafs $516,667 next season while adding a $258,333 penalty in 2026–27.
Fellow center Kampf, 30, has two years remaining on his contract with a $2.4 million annual cap hit. He played only one game in the postseason after being a healthy scratch in the first round, having finished the regular season with 13 points in 59 games.
A buyout would yield $716,667 in cap savings in each of the next two years, but would also result in a $358,333 cap charge in 2027–28 and 2028–29.
