Where The Avalanche Will Pick In The First Round Of The NHL Draft

The NHL Draft will take place on June 28 and 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada, just one day after the Awards show, where Nathan MacKinnon will likely take home the Hart Trophy. 24th will be the highest the Avalanche have picked at the draft since 2019, when they took Bowen Byram 4th overall and Alex Newhook 16th overall. That’s what happens when you have successful regular seasons. Last summer, the Avalanche took Calum Ritchie at 27, and then selected Mikhail Gulyayev four spots later.

Colorado made it a point to hold onto their first round pick at the Trade Deadline this past March, but that doesn’t mean the pick is necessarily off the table this summer. This is still a team that is looking to win a Stanley Cup right now, so if they feel the need to move it for immediate help, they will. At the same time, they also need to make sure they’ve got a pipeline of young talent coming over the next handful of years, as they’ll have some expensive contracts on the books.

We’ll start digging in to the NHL Draft here soon as far as who might be available when the Avalanche make their selection. Last summer, we spoke to the head scout at Hockey Prospect, and scouted a handful of players ahead of the draft. Our first report was actually on Ritchie, so maybe I’ll be careful of who I pick first this year.
