Why this year's Hockey Hall of Fame class is truly unique

In the 80-year history of the Hockey Hall of Fame, the 2023 class holds a unique distinction.

The list of 2023 inductees features goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist, Mike Vernon and Tom Barrasso. According to ESPN Stats and Info, this is the first Hall of Fame class ever to include three netminders.

It's only the fourth time a Hall of Fame class has included more than one goaltender. The last time multiple goalies earned the honor was in 1980, when Harry Lumley and Gump Worsley were enshrined.

A 15-year veteran, Lundqvist headlined the group, elected on his first try on the ballot. A five-time All-Star and one-time Vezina Trophy winner, Lundqvist is not only the winningest goaltender in New York Rangers history, but his 459 total wins are good for sixth-best on the NHL's all-time list.

Vernon spent 19 seasons in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers. After helping the Flames win the Stanley Cup in 1989, Vernon earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1997 during the Red Wings' historic Cup win. With 385 wins, Vernon ranked seventh all-time following his retirement after the 1999-200 season; he ranks 16th currently.

Barrasso was also a two-time Stanley Cup winner, playing 19 NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues. He manned the cage for the Penguins' back-to-back Cup wins in 1991 and 1992 and has a Vezina (1984) and William M. Jennings Trophies (1985) on his mantel. Retiring after the 2002-2003 season, Barrasso is 20th (369) in all-time wins.

The 2023 class also includes Pierre Turgeon, and Caroline Ouellette, with former head coach Ken Hitchcock and general manager Pierre Lacroix. The induction ceremony for the newest inductees will take place on November 13 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
