Winnipeg Jets Make Historic Announcement After Win vs. Sharks

With odds heavily stacked against them Monday night against the San Jose Sharks, the Winnipeg Jets refused to go down, and as a result, Mark Scheifele and company triumphantly extended their win streak to 10 games.

Down by a goal with under a minute left in regulation, the Jets managed to force overtime after defenseman Josh Morrissey scored a goal to even the score at 1-1. Scheifele then completed the Jets' comeback with a goal in overtime to give his team a 2-1 victory at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.

Scheifele also hit two birds with one stone, as his goal not only gave the Jets the victory but also put him atop the franchise's all-time list for goals scored.

The Jets announced Scheifele's historic accomplishment with a post on Instagram.

"MOST GOALS IN FRANCHISE HISTORY WITH 329," the caption of the graphic on the post read.

Scheifele entered the Sharks game tied with Ilya Kovalchuk for the most goals in franchise history with 328 each. Kovalchuk scored all those goals with the Atlanta Thrashers, who later folded and whose franchise was moved to Winnipeg.

On the season, Scheifele, who is a two-time NHL All-Star, has 32 goals and 33 assists for 65 points through 58 games.

The 31-year-old Scheifele was humble in his reaction to hitting a major career milestone

“You think about it, but you also don’t really think about it. It is what it is,” the Kitchener, Ontario said after the game (h/t Sportsnet). “You just want to go out there and play good hockey. When a chance to score a goal comes, you obviously want to bury it. It felt nice.”

Scheifele can add to his goal count on Wednesday when the Jets play the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.
