San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle during the early hours of Monday morning in an incident on Mission Street. The 27-year-old underwent surgery hours later and is expected to recover fully.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. on the 1700 block of Mission Street, just hours after the Super Bowl concluded at Levi's Stadium.
San Francisco Police Department spokesman Evan Sernoffsky confirmed officers responded to the scene and transported White to a local hospital.
Police said a verbal altercation broke out between two groups inside a business, which led to the shooting. White was not believed to have been involved in that altercation, according to investigators.
"Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco," the 49ers said in a statement. "He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate."
The injury is not considered life-threatening or career-threatening, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

The 49ers acquired White from the New England Patriots on Oct 29, 2025, in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. The Patriots also sent a seventh-round pick to San Francisco in the deal.
White was drafted by New England in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 46th overall, out of Georgia Tech. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive end appeared in nine games for San Francisco this season, making two starts.
He recorded 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks while playing 319 defensive snaps for the 49ers. White remains under contract through the 2026 season.
This marks the second time in recent years a 49ers player has been shot in San Francisco. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt at Union Square in August 2024. Pearsall recovered and returned to play that season.
White's recovery timeline has not been announced. The 49ers will provide updates on his condition as they become available.
