On Sunday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times they're placing starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the 15-day injured list.
Yamamoto left Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals with right triceps tightness, allowing one base hit on 28 pitches in two scoreless innings.
Per DiGiovanna, Yamamoto told coaches that he felt tightness in his arm during warmups. But he didn't feel the injury was "serious enough" to sideline him, and it isn't a concern. He will undergo further testing, however.
The Dodgers (43-29) have one of the best pitching rotations in baseball. They rank fourth in ERA (3.31), third in WHIP (1.13) and are tied for seventh in strikeouts (617). Still, Yamamoto's injury is a costly blow. In 14 games this season, he has posted the 13th-best ERA (2.92) in baseball, 84 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP and a 6-2 record.
The Dodgers also have some concerns about their bullpen depth. Relief pitcher Brusdar Graterol (shoulder inflammation) hasn't pitched this season. Joe Kelly (shoulder) recently threw a 25-pitch bullpen session, but he's still on the 60-day IL.
Los Angeles is second in the National League behind the Philadelphia Phillies (47-23). The Dodgers need strong pitching to catch up, so they should consider adding another arm before the trade deadline on July 30.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently listed the Dodgers as a potential landing spot for Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott, who would be a solid option for L.A. In 27 games, he has recorded a 1.93 ERA, 31 strikeouts, a 1.21 WHIP and 25 saves.
