Watch: Willie Mays visits Vin Scully before final broadcast
Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports

A great video of late baseball legends Vin Scully and Willie Mays talking in 2016 emerged via social media on Tuesday after news of Mays’ death went public.

Mays died Tuesday at the age of 93. He was a first-ballot inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame and regarded as one of the best players ever. Scully died in 2022 at the age of 94 and is regarded as one of the best — if not the best — sports announcers of all time.

The video shows a 2016 meeting between the two legends ahead of Scully’s final broadcast. In the video, Scully told Mays that the former Giants outfielder was his favorite player ever and the best player he had ever seen.

“First of all, you’ve always been my favorite player, even though you wore the wrong uniform,” the longtime Dodgers announcer joked. “You’ve also been the greatest player I ever saw, and I’ve said that for a long, long time.”

Scully also described Mays as “dazzling” and praised Mays for how hard he went after balls in center field.

That’s a wonderful piece of baseball history, especially now that both men have since died.
